1st Look: “Justice League” Official Trailer #1

Buckle up, buttercup. It’s the freshly dropped trailer for the new Justice League movie.

It’s Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman together on screen in a live-action production, for the first time ever. Following the apparent death of Superman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, these heroes come together to face the greatest threat the world has ever known. There are action scenes aplenty, with the powers and abilities of each of the members of the newly forged League on full display. We don’t see Superman in this trailer, though the final scene in Batman v Superman strongly hints that he’ll be back.

What other-wordly threat are they fighting? It looks like Darkseid’s parademons to us. We’re betting it’s Darkseid, especially considering that they set this up in Batfleck’s visions of the future vents in Batman v Superman, together with the warning of The Flash as Bruce sees Barry Allen’s head pop out of the Speed Force to warn him.

There’s something else on display too. Each of the characters has an emotional validity, and the writing demonstrates that the unrelenting grittiness of the previous film is being leavened with the one thing Marvel Comics movies have had all along that DC Comics movies have not: a sense of humor. The characters in this film have an emotional balance, instead of being in the deep end of the emo pool all the time.

Oh, and if anybody had any doubts about how Aquaman was going to fit in in an otherwise all land-bound team, check out Jason Mamoa fender-surfing on the Batmobile.

Affleck, Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher star in the Warner Bros. tentpole. Amy Adams, Amber Heard, Jeremy Irons, J.K. Simmons,and Willem Dafoe will also appear in the film. Henry Cavill’s Superman has been missing from recent promotions, including the latest trailer.

While the most recent footage is billed as the “first official” trailer, an earlier cut of a trailer for Justice League surprised fans at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con with its upbeat tone. The Zach Snyder directed film hits theaters on Nov. 17, while Momoa’s standalone Aquaman was recently pushed back to Dec. 21, 2018.
