The Doctor is Out: Peter Capaldi Leaving

Peter Capaldi has shocked fans, both negatively and positively, with his recent confirmation for his departure as the most recent incarnation of the world’s most beloved Time Lord. During an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Jo Whiley, Capaldi revealed that he will be leaving at the end of series 10, with the Christmas special as his final hurrah as the Doctor.

“One of the greatest privileges of being Doctor Who is to see the world at its best,” he told Jo Whiley. “From our brilliant crew and creative team working for the best broadcaster on the planet, to the viewers and fans whose endless creativity, generosity and inclusiveness points to a brighter future ahead. I can’t thank everyone enough. It’s been cosmic.”

Fans have been showing an array of emotions. Some are saying he was their favorite and will be greatly missed, while others have stated they will start watching the show again once he’s gone. When he was announced as the Doctor on August 4th 2013, fans weren’t sure how well it would work, seeing as he has previously been featured on the show as a Roman merchant named Lucius Caecilius Iucundus in “The Fires of Pompeii.” He exceeded expectations as the Doctor and showed fans of the new series a side of the Doctor they hadn’t seen before.

Capaldi’s exit from the show isn’t the only one happening at the end of this coming season — in early 2016, Steven Moffat, the show’s lead writer and executive producer, had announced that he will be leaving after six series. Right now there are no clues as to who might be piloting the TARDIS once Capaldi moves on. While Capaldi and Moffat will be greatly missed, we are excited to see what the future of the show holds and who our next Doctor will be!
