1st Look: ‘Passengers’ Trailer

In the far distant figure, a generation ship called Avalon is taking more than five thousand people to a new home among the stars. A 120 year journey is interrupted for two of the passengers when they are awoken early – 90 years early. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in this sci-fi thriller.

The trailer shows us some of the rather adorkable developing relationship between Aurora (Lawrence) and Jim Preston (Pratt), but it also shows us a starship in crisis, badly damaged and heading for an encounter with a star that’s far too close for comfort. It also shows us that something else is afoot, and that there’s a reason they both woke up so early.

We can’t help but notice at least a thematic relationship with the Pixar movie Wall-E, in which a similar generation ship, fitted as a luxury cruise liner, faces a vaguely similar crisis, with the recovery of the situation being up to two or three characters who seem to be the only ones not completely oblivious to the crisis. Passengers appears to be pulling off quite a trick – being a small, personal movie, and being an epic action adventure movie, and at the same time. Even in this trailer, you can see the on-screen chemistry between the two leads, and that should put us on the edge of our seats when their lives, and the lives of the thousands of others on the ship, are threatened with extinction.

Sony Pictures’ Passengers is written by John Spaihts, directed by Morten Tyldem, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt and Michael Sheen,  and makes it’s big screen debut on December 21, 2016.
