‘The Case of Evil’ Is Film Noir Horror Done Right

SAN DIEGO, CA – December 18, 2015 – Today, San Diego-based Production Company Swords & Circuitry Studios unlocked their award-winning horror short The Case of Evil for online viewing. This premiere marks the first time that audiences outside the film festival circuit can see it for themselves.

Since its debut at the Horrible Imaginings Horror Film Festival in San Diego in October of last year, Case has racked up an astonishing thirty eight official selections at film festivals both in the U.S. and abroad, and won six awards for the production including Best Horror Film and Best Actor (for leading man Merrick McCartha.) It was also nominated for Best Screenplay at the 2015 San Diego Film Awards.

Neal and Jana Hallford, producers, writers and directors of 'A Case of Evil'

The writing, production, and directorial duties for the film were shared between the husband and wife production team Neal Hallford and Jana Hallford, and represents the first fictional short from Swords & Circuitry Studios. Previously the Hallfords have worked on a number of other projects of interest to the fan community including the still-in-production Star Trek documentary The Con of Wrath with noted “Trekspert” Larry Nemecek, and The Crypto-Historians with Star Trek Deep Space Nine writer Jimmy Diggs. Neal Hallford has previously been a guest (as well as a guest host) on SCIFI.radio’s panel discussion show,  The Event Horizon.

“It’s tough to have to essentially ‘lock up’ something you’ve created from the public for a year,” Neal Hallford says of finally releasing the film online, “But in order to get into most film festivals, you have to make it exclusively available to the circuit. We’re just happy to finally share it with everyone.”

“We couldn’t have done this without our exceptional cast and crew,” says co-producer Jana Hallford. “We’re very grateful for their contributions, and I’m pleased that our behind-the-scenes documentary Inside the Case of Evil accompanies the short as part of the rental. It’s great to see the stars breaking character to talk about making the film, and also to feature our behind-the-scenes crew who otherwise are only known by their outstanding work in the short.”

Influenced strongly by the horror films of the 1930’s through the 1950’s, Case draws heavily on classic films like Dracula and Cat People for its suspenseful atmosphere. Many critics have particularly praised the production’s replication of not just the look but the feel of the classic Universal monster pictures. Geoffrey Thorne, a producer for TNT’s The Librarians is particularly complementary of the film. “The Case of Evil is straight out awesome,” he says. “Well done all around.”

Featuring rising star Merrick McCartha (a recent guest star on both Criminal Minds and Scandal) and film newcomer Rebecca Sausedo, The Case of Evil was scored by composer Carvin Knowles who also provided music for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit blog. Special make up effects for the film were created by San Diego’s resident “Queen of Gore,” Francia Cohen.

“The Case of Evil” and “Inside the Case of Evil” are available to watch online, or may be purchased on DVD or Blu-Ray at http://TheCaseOfEvil.com.
