‘Star Trek Continues’ Wins at Geekie Awards!

The groundbreaking Star Trek fan web series Star Trek Continues has won this year’s 2014 Geekie Award for Best Web Series. Actor, writer and director Vic Mignogna was joined on stage by cast members Grant Imahara (Mr. Sulu), Michele Specht (Dr. Elise McKennah), Kipleigh Brown (Ensign Smith from the new episode Fairest of them All) and by director James Kerwin.

Star Trek is a siren’s voice that cannot be ignored for long. From the time it first went on the air in 1966, it has captured the imaginations of generation after generation of viewers and ignited life long passions for science fiction. It has been the inspiration for many who go on to professional careers in science, engineering, design, writing, acting, visual effects, film making and acting.

Vic Mignogna leads the bridge crew as Captain Kirk along with Todd Haberkorn as Mr. Spock, Christopher Doohan (son of James Doohan) as Scotty, Grant Imahara from Myth Busters as Sulu, Kim Stinger as Uhura and Wyatt Lenhart as Chekov. Dr. McCoy is played by Chuck Huber with Larry Nemecek in the role for the first two episodes. The crew roster reads like a list of Star Trek legends, boasting the likes of Doug Drexler as ship designer, Marina Sirtis as the voice of the ship’s computer, and many others.

There are a few fan productions based on the original Star Trek series, but this one is a standout. Star Trek was originally meant to be a five year story arc, and Star Trek Continues is aimed at completing the final two years of that original five-year mission. The attention to detail is exquisite. You’d expect a fanatical attention to detail in the props, costumes and sets, but Star Trek Continues pushes the envelope by precisely replicating the style in lighting, writing, scene direction, editing, and of course the acting.

The results speak for themselves. They’re producing work that is arguably as good as, and in many cases better than, the original 1966 series. If you’re a Trekkie, you’re really going to love this.
