Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Team Up In IDW Crossover

by Michael Brown, staff writer

eed137e2-ab30-4ca2-88af-c44aa644b279For the first time in comics, the Ghostbusters and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will team up in a multi-universe spanning, four-issue crossover event celebrating the 30th anniversaries of both franchises.  The series will be published by IDW, who already publishes both of the books’ individual series. In the story, an accident sends Leonardo and the gang to another universe and a similar New York City, but with one glaring exception: this one has a serious ghost problem. And if that wasn’t enough, the turtles and their new allies, the Ghostbusters, discover that the pizza-chomping ninja teens didn’t come alone.

The crossover will be written by current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles writer Tom Waltz, and Ghostbusters writer Erik Burnham. Waltz also served as editor for the Ghostbusters  series, while  Burnham wrote the critically acclaimed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret History of the Foot Clan.

“A couple of years ago, Tom Waltz and I chatted like the fans we are about how insanely fun this crossover would be …” said Erik Burnham.  “As I sit here today, my excitement level is at eleven.”

“This is an idea that Erik, series editor Bobby Curnow, and I have bounced off each other for quite a while,” said series co-writer Tom Walsh. “And what better time to do it than during the combined 30th anniversary celebration.”

Burnham’s partner-in-crime and long time Ghostbusters artist Dan Schoening will take up the artistic duties, both on the cover and interior. You can see Schoening’s  work in Mass Hysteria, the current Ghostbusters  story arc celebrating the Ghostbusters’ 30th anniversary. Burnham and Schoening’s Ghostbusters ongoing series is scheduled to end in September with issue 20.

Earlier this year, IDW’s The X-Files: Conspiracy event toyed with the idea that the turtles and the Ghostbusters exist in the same universe, in a crossover that teamed The X-Files’ Lone Gunmen with the turtles and Ghostbusters, as well as the Transformers and The Crow.

The long-awaited tale of unlicensed nuclear accelerators and mutated reptilian ninjas will arrive on comic shop shelves this October,  just in time for Halloween.
