Earth becomes the focal point of a cosmic prophecy foretelling the end of days for anybody who speaks Latin who are friendly but incomprehensible even though they are only slightly radioactive and cannot be destroyed by the army, navy, air force, space force and/or marines , but scientists create a new weapon which does not work but they die from catching the common cold.
