In a lawless Steampunk West filled with outlaws, machines, and supernatural threats, a father must serve as judge, jury, and executioner to protect his family-risking the loss of those he loves most.

From the studio that brought you Devil May Cry comes a new anime sci-fi thriller series, Bass X Machina. It’s a blend of steampunk/cyberpunk sci-fi and pulp western. Brian Tyree Henry plays the lead role of Bass. We’ve heard his voice before: he was Jefferson Davis in Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse.

It’s being made by South Korean animation studio Studio Mir, operating out of Seoul. The cast members mostly come from a voice acting background. They include Tati Gabrielle, Currie Graham, Cree Summer, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Chaske Spencer and Starletta DuPois.

From Brian Tyree Henry’s Instagram:

This has been a true passion project of mine for some time: Anime X Western X Punk Rock. These are the ingredients of Bass X Machina.

Animation has always been my safe space. It always gave me permission to dream bigger than I ever could. But I never really saw myself. I never saw Heroes and Heroines who reflect my culture.

Stories where we see ourselves as godly and imbued with powers that can change the world and how we’re seen. Especially not in the genre of Westerns. So I present to you the first trailer of Bass X Machina – a collaboration with Netflix Adult Animation and Studio Mir. This is for those who were and are like me. I hope you can see yourselves reflected.

Bass X Machina premieres November 3rd, only on Netflix.
