Epic Games sells Artstation, Sketchfab to Kitbash

The portfolio platform ArtStation and the 3D model marketplace Sketchfab have now been sold by Epic Games to KitBash for an undisclosed fee. This comes just a bit over five years after both these platforms were acquired by the Fortnite and Unreal Engine developer in 2021. Epic says it cut both these businesses loose so they can concentrate on their core business, which is Unreal Engine 6, the Epic Games Store, its wider developer ecosystem, and of course, Fortnite itself. The game is still wildy popular, though Fortnite engagement is now down significantly in a slide that began in 2025.

The move comes just over five years after both platforms were acquired by the Fortnite and Unreal Engine developer in 2021.

KitBash is best known for operating 3D art platforms KitBash3D and Greyscalegorilla. These are marketplaces for game assets, design and animation tools, asset management tools, plugins and the other stuff game developers need. Sketchfab aligns very closely with their core business, and Artstation isn’t far behind. The move consolidates Kitbash’s dominance in this market niche. There is a bit of public discomfiture over the acquisitions, but Banks Boutté, co-CEO of KitBash, said the company will strive to “protect what users value most about each platform.”

“KitBash has been part of the creative community for over a decade, and we know firsthand how central ArtStation and Sketchfab are to artists and 3D creators around the world,” said Boutté in a blog post on the Epic website.

“These are platforms where people have built portfolios, careers, and communities. That trust is real, and our first priority is to protect what users value most about each platform, listen to the people who rely on them, and build thoughtfully for the future.”

The deal will not result in pricing changes for ArtStation, Sketchfab, or KitBash products.

Epic is letting these two companies out from under their umbrella in an attempt to cut costs. The downturn in Fortnite engagement is forcing them to eliminate over 1,000 jobs. The U.S. company said the layoffs will result in over $500 million in savings.

If you are already active on either the Artstation or Sketchfab services, and the statements from Kitbash are true, you should see no changes either in how the services work, at least initially, or in the pricing for these services.
