In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Star Wars is returning to the big screen. Star Wars will return to theaters everywhere on Feb. 19, 2027. It’s supposed to be a limited engagement, but there was a theater in San Diego that ran Star Wars for a full year in 1977-78. So if demand is great enough, history may repeat itself.

Although DVDs and Blu-rays make it possible to have a home library of your favorite films, they were designed to be viewed on the big screen. Many films are designed with the impact of spectacle in mind, and lose something when watched on a smaller screen, like a TV set or your laptop. Few films exemplify this better than George Lucas’ original masterpiece.

Lucasfilm is not the only studio doing this. Top Gun is scheduled to be re-released in 2026, to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

With so many studios focusing on sequels and reboots, many fans would rather see the original movies re-released on the big screen than yet another attempt at recycling.

It’s too bad that we have to wait an entire year for this rerelease, but it makes sense. The film will be officially 50 years old, and it’s still casting a very very long shadow over science fantasy film, and the industry as a whole. It’s reshaped lives, and inspired generations of fans. That’s something to celebrate.
