It’s the final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and it’s pretty clear that the little blue hedgehog from outer space has finally hit stride. The film stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Idris Alba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, James Marsden, Kristen Ritter and Keanu Reeves. Without looking it up, I’m going to guess that Reeves plays the role of Shadow, of whom Sonic can be seen in this new trailer asking for fashion tips (post-edit: nailed it).
There’s been a high level security breach at a secret lab, and a dark, twisted hedgehog named Shadow has broken out and is causing mayhem and destruction wherever he goes. He’s fast, of course. He’s extremely powerful, more powerful than Sonic himself. In fact, things are so bad that Team Sonic has to go in search of the one man who might have a chance of containing the threat: Doctor Robotnik. And his father.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a character created by the Japanese game developers Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima. He is the star of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and the mascot of the Japanese video game company Sega.
The stakes are pretty high, fate of the world hanging in the balance, and all of that. If they weren’t, there’d be little point in watching the film. The pitch, the temperature and tone of this third film in the franchise appears perfect. The director is American filmmaker, animator and visual effects artist Jeff Fowler, who directed the previous two Sonic films and the Knuckles TV series on Paramount+. If you do something long enough, you get good at it, and it all comes together in the new trailer.
We had been under the impression that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was going straight to the Paramount+ streaming service, bypassing the theaters entirely, but no, it releases in theaters on December 20, 2024.
