Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford star in the newest chapter of the MCU saga as in Captain America: Brave New World.

Sam Wilson has taken up the mantle of Captain America and finds himself in the middle of an international incident. Before he can fight the bad guys, though, he has to figure out exactly who the bad guys are. Anthony Mackie plays the title role, with Harrison Ford as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

Watching the trailer, it looks like Ross, has subjected himself to experimentation that turn him into one of the Marvel Universe’s iconic characers, the Red Hullk.

Fans of the Incredible Hulk will know that General Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross was the military head of the gamma bomb project that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk in the first place. He’s the father of Betty Ross, and for a time, Bruce Banner’s father-in-law, (just to make the relationships extra complicated). In the comics, he became the Red Hulk so that he could take down Banner/Hulk. Ross but became more sympathetic towards Banner and eventually become a superhero, serving time as a member of the Avengers and forming his own Thunderbolts team.

It looks like this iteration of Red Hulk follows Ross’s more misguided pursuits. Trying to use the power of the Red Hulk as a military advantage against adversaries of the United States probably won’t end well. That’s the danger of having great power: you’re open to manipulation by others who want that power but cannot wield it themselves.

Captain America: Brave New World stars Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Liv Tyler, Rose Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel) and Giancarlo Esposito, and is scheduled for release in the United States on February 15, 2025.
