Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell is almost unrecognizable as #ThePenguin in the new ?@HBO? Original Limited Series.

Following the events of “The Batman,” Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin, makes a play to seize the reins of the crime world in Gotham. It’s another Batman-less Batman series, but it shows the strength of the material that you can build a complete story based on secondary characters from the mythos.

Colin Farrell’s makeup transformation to become the Penguin is astonishing. He is the second actor to play The Penguin in live action to be seen smoking tobacco after Burgess Meredith in Batman (1966) and Batman: The Movie (1966). Although promotional material for Danny DeVito’s portrayal in Batman Returns (1992) had him smoking, in the actual film he did no such thing and even rejected the habit.

After Robin Lord Taylor’s portrayal in the series Gotham (2014), Colin Farrell’s version of The Penguin is the only other live action portrayal of the character to have an active and major role in the mafia, as Burgess Meredith’s was a super villain looking for money and power, and Danny DeVito’s was a deformed terrorist looking for revenge on the city of Gotham.

The eight episode mini-series The Penguin premiers September 19 on Max.
