Starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck in the title role, and with the surprise castings of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, this new film picks up where the last one left off, with the Joker incarcerated and Harlene Quinzell entranced by the Madcap Master of Mayhem himself, the Joker. In the movie, her name is truncated to “Lee”, following the series’ ideation of maintaining as tenuous a connection to the DC Comics Batman universe as possible. Batman is nowhere to be found in this film but it’s clearly in his universe somewhere.

This will be Joaquin Phoenix’s first sequel film. The movie’s title, Folie a Deux, implied the casting of Harley Quinn, which is now obviously confirmed. JOKER 2′ has been rated R for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.” That probably means Lady Gaga.

Like Joaquin Phoenix in both Joker films, Lady Gaga went full method acting for her performance. She insisted that the cast and crew to only call her “Lee” throughout filming. Cinematographer for each Joker film, Lawrence Sher, was quoted saying, “I Never Even Met the Real Lady Gaga on Set, I Didn’t Know Her at All.”

The film also stars Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond; The writers are Scott Silver and Todd Phillips, with an acknowledgment to Bob Kane and Bill Finger, creators of Batman, and Bruce Timm, the creator of the character Harley Quinn. Jerry Robinson is also acknowledged. Todd Phillips is the director. The whole thing hits theaters and IMAX October 4, 2024. More trailers are coming on this one. Watch this space.
