The latest trailer has dropped for Warner Bros. The Suicide Squad, and this looks like some fun stuff. In it, Idris Alba plays Bloodsport, captured and imprisoned for putting Superman in the ICU with a Kryptonite bullet. He’s forced to join the Suicide Squad for the sake of his daughter, whom Amanda Waller has arranged to be arrested as a bargaining chip to get Bloodsport into the Squad.
The Suicide Squad: they’re armed. They’re dangerous. And (we hope) they’re on our side. They’re “mad, bad, and dangerous to know.”
The Suicide Squad consists of supervillains and a few vigilante-ish superheroes who have been “recruited” to work for the good guys, on missions to dangerous to risk Superman or Wonder Woman. Recruit may be too kind a word, if they disobey orders or try to escape, there is a small explosive device implanted at the base of their skulls that will detonate, converting their skull into a mess of strawberry jam.
James Gunn is directing this one. His skill with genre movies and ensemble casts is very apparent in this new trailer.
DC Comics has introduced its share of bizarre villain types, and The Suicide Squad has them on tap. There’s King Shark (who, in the trailer, eats a guy after saying “nom-nom” – we are so here for that), Deadshot, Harley Quinn of course, and the mentally disturbed Peacemaker – and an intriguing character named the Polkadot Man, whose suit is covered with colored dots, each of which becomes some kind of dot-based superweapon when deployed. James Gunn even does a cameo role, playing Weasel.
The all-star cast includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quin, Rocky‘s Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark, Michael Rooker (Yondu Udonta in Guardians of the Galaxy) as Savant, Idris Elba (Heimdall in the Thor movies) as Bloodsport, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Jai Courtney (Eric in Divergent, Kyle Reese in Terminator Genisys) as Captain Boomerang, Alice Braga (Anna in I Am Legend, Frey in Elysium) as SolSoria, John Cena (voice of Yoshi the polar bear in Dolittle, Agent Burns in Bumblee) as Peacemaker, Nathan Fillion (Mal Reynolds in Firefly) as T.D.K., David Dastmalchian (Abra Kadabra in The Flash TV show, Piter de Vries in Dune) as the Polka-Dot Man, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, and James Gunn (Sammy Capulet in Tromeo and Juliet, Kraglin in Guardians of the Galaxy) is Weasel. Viola Davis (Hannah Crane in Century City, Dr. Barton in The Andromeda Strain) reprises her role as Amanda Waller, the tough as nails director of this top secret project in applied felon rehabilitation.
The Suicide Squad, the sequel to the popular Suicide Squad movie in 2016, will be released in US theaters on August 6, 2021. Foreign release dates may vary.
