In 1963 King Kong fought Godzilla. In 2021, they’re having a rematch. Godzilla vs.Kong is less a remake of the 1963 movie King Kong vs. Godzilla and more a sequel to Kong: Skull Island, the pinnacle of Legendary’s long-planned MonsterVerse quartet, beginning with the 2014 reboot of Godzilla.

When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was picking up where the 2005 King Kong reboot had ended, not that it was a sequel to the 2017 Kong, and that they were taking Kong’s body out to dump in the ocean, because that would be cheaper during the Depression than hiring an army of gravediggers. No, wrong King Kong movie. Instead …

There is a little girl who seems to be the only one able to communicate with Kong, rather like Lois Lane with Titano in Superman: theAnimated Series, or Jill with Mighty Joe Young.

The movie features an international cast. Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård (Eric Northman in True Blood, Tarzan in The Legend of Tarzan) stars as Nathan Lind, who wants to use Kong against Godzilla. British actress Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven in Stranger Things, Enola in Enola Holmes) reprises her role as Madison Russell from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Lance Reddick appears as the director of Monarch. Reddick has substantial Geek Cred: Charon in John Wick 1, 2, and 3, the voice of Ra’s al Ghul in Beware the Batman, Papa Legba in American Horror Story, the voice of Lunaris in DuckTales. Godzilla vs. Kong also features Mexican actress/singer Eiza González Reyna as Maya Simmons. American child actress Kaylee Hottle, who is fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) plays little Jia, who may be more Kong’s pet than the other way around. Saturn Award winning actor Kyle Chandler (Gary Hobson in Early Edition, Bruce Baxter in th 2005 King Kong reprises Mark Russell, the role he played in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.)

Is Monarch pushing Kong and Godzilla into a battle royale, and if so, why? Do Kong and Godzilla go after each other of their own accord? Is someone else egging them on to fight for reasons of his own? Will Tokyo ever recover from Godzilla’s unscheduled urban renewal project? When the movie is released in March, will it be safe yet to go to theaters again?

Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled to be released internationally on March 26, 2021 and in the United States on March 31, 2021, In the US it will also stream on HBO Max.

So, after watching the trailer, do you want to see Godzilla vs. Kong? Which monster do you think will win? Why are they fighting? Did someone instigate the fight, and if so, why?

  1. Godzilla (2014)
  2. Kong: Skull Island (2017)
  3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
  4. 4. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
