Earth suffers a temporary glitch in the space-time continuum, creating sentiant walruses who are friendly but incomprehensible even though they have seen every episode of Firefly and cannot be destroyed by a slap to the side of the head with a large fish , but scientists create a new weapon which does not work so they eat us all.
