A sixth-grade science teacher may just be Earth’s only hope. The second of Andy Weir’s novels reaches the big screen, and it’s the ultimate fish out of water, reluctant hero story. Watch the trailer.

Set in the near future, it centers on junior high (middle) school-teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up from a coma afflicted with amnesia. He gradually remembers that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to find a means of reversing a stellar dimming event that could cause the extinction of humanity.

Project Hail Mary is from a screenplay by Drew Goddard and based on Andy Weir’s New York Times best-selling novel. It was optioned in 2020, and the treatment went through nine revisions between 2020 and 2023 before preproduction began in 2024. The film stars Academy Award® nominee Ryan Gosling. This will be Academy Award® winning filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s first film as directors since 22 Jump Street, and their first directorial venture together since their firing from Solo: A Star Wars Story. They’re attached to one more Andy Weir property, currently in development, called Artemis.

The last film Ryan Gosling in was last year’s Barbie, in which he played Ken. He’s in another film that will be released before Project Hail Mary, loosely based on the 80’s television series, The Fall Guy.

The film comes to both movie theaters and IMAX theaters on March 20, 2026.
