Kathryn Hahn is returning as Agatha Harknesss in a new Marvel Television series, Agatha All Along. Except she thinks she’s a detective. That can’t be right.
The trailer opens with Agatha Harkness in a detective role, struggling with a murder case. A familiar name, “W. Maximoff,” appears on a list of dates next to October 13, in red ink. Aubrey Plaza’s character challenges Agatha’s perception of herself, leading to a sequence where Agatha vows to reclaim her witch identity and build her coven. Patti LuPone’s character questions the sanity of anyone joining Agatha’s coven, to which Agatha responds, “I’m not looking for right-minded witches.”
Background and Cast
Agatha All Along was first announced after Kathryn Hahn’s character became a breakout hit in Disney+’s WandaVision. The show has undergone several name changes, from Agatha: Coven of Chaos to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, and then simply Agatha. Finally, cooler heads prevailed and we got the most obvious title. They won’t even have to change the theme song.
The series features a star-studded cast, including Patti LuPone, Aubrey Plaza, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Maria Dizzia, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, and Okwui Okpokwasili, with Emma Caulfield and Debra Jo Rupp reprising their WandaVision roles. The WandaVision songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez will return to contribute original songs to the series.
This last bit was probably a really really good idea, since the theme song they wrote, also titled Agatha All Along, hit the number one spot on iTunes the week it was released in 2021.
Production and Release Challenges
Initially slated for a winter 2023 release, “Agatha All Along” was delayed due to last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes and Disney’s evolving streaming strategy. CEO Bob Iger recently announced that Disney would limit itself to two MCU shows per year as part of its updated Marvel TV strategy.
Agatha All Along, starring Kathryn Hahn in the title role, will premiere on Disney+ with a two-episode debut on September 18.
