Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott was one of Star Trek‘s most beloved characters. The role was created by Canadian actor James Doohan in the original series and movies, and continued by English actor Simon Pegg in the JJ Abrams’ reboots. Now, for the first time, the Scottish engineer will be played by a Scottish actor, Martin Quinn.

Martin Quinn appeared in the TV show The Lovers as Jason and in one episode of the TV show Derry Girls as Cousin Rob. He’s appeared in police shows (Annika and Scot Squad) and has a strong background in comedy (Limmy’s Show, Mint Chocolate Chip). Quinn is young, only thirty, and will be playing a much younger version of Montgomery Scott as a series regular in the streaming-only show, Strange New Worlds. He has already had his debut in the role on the Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 10, “Hegonomy”.

Geek Cred

Thus far, Martin Quinn has provided voices for the video game Diablo IV. Quinn also voiced Cameron Lowther in the podcast series Dr. Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures, from Big Finish. Playing Scotty as a series regular will be his big break in the world of Sci-Fi.

On the theatrical stage, Quinn as starred as Oskar in The Right One in both Dundee and London. He also starred in the title role in Oor Wullie: The Musical when it did a national tour.

No word yet whether Quinn as Scotty will be singing any Robert Burns songs in the engine room, but Quinn will be contributing a bit of authenticity by adding some Scottish slang to Scotty’s vocabulary. The Daily Mail reported Quinn has added the word “baw-heid,” a mild insult to describe someone not very bright. Also, the show is retconning Montgomery Scott to be from Paisley now, instead of Aberdeen as he was in the original. Martin Quinn was born in Paisley, in Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Live long and prosper, Engineer Scott. We wish you luck.
