Humankind has reached the toothpaste-out-of-the-tube milestone in its history. How will we respond to the potential threats represented by artificial intelligence? Will it overpower us? Or become us?

Gareth Edwards was the director of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and this time around he writes, directs and produces this post-apocolyptic tale. In The Creator, humans have surrendered the safekeeping of humanity to an artificial intelligence that gets more power and control over their lives than they planned on, and one day it drops a nuke on Los Angeles. From then on, it’s all out war between the surviving humans and the A.I. originally designed to protect them.

A good portion of the cast are androids with human faces, and the action film not only exploits the themes of technology gone wrong and the potential threat of uncontrolled A.I., but what it truly means to be human.

The Creator qualifies as a true science fiction film. It stars Allison Janny, Gemma Chan and Ralph Ineson. 20th Century Studios releases to theaters on September 29, 2023.
