Today’s selection is a sweet parody of the chart-topping We Don’t Talk About Bruno from Disney’s Encanto. It combines high school astronomy with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s latin salsa, and spoofs not only the wildly popular song, but Pluto’s planethood as well.

We admire Jon Pumper’s wild imagination, his tight harmonies, and how he manages to bring the parody to its greatest heights by combining skillfully lyrical puns with visual storytelling and humor. Portraying his “son”, for example, is himself, in child’s clothing, crouched below the eyeline of “dad”, but using tiny tiny hands taken from a cooperative doll.

Jon Pumper is a pianist, posting piano tutorial videos on all sorts of pop media songs so that piano musicians can learn to play them themselves.

According to Billboard, Bruno drew 34.9 million U.S. streams (up 8%) and 1.5 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 239%) and sold 12,300 downloads (up 32%, aided by 69-cent discount pricing in the iTunes Store, good for the Hot 100’s top Sales Gainer award) in the Jan. 21-27 tracking week.

Filk parodies fuel a lot of what we play here on SCIFI.radio. We hope you enjoy this one; listen for it in our daily play list lineup!
