What do you get if you mash up that famous song Good Morning from Singin’ in the Rain with Star Wars? You get an all singing, all dancing double zing to your geeky heartstrings!
This delightful video is a tribute to both Debbie Reynolds, not only an Oscar-nominated actor but also singer, dancer, actress and all around performer, and Carrie Fisher, . She rose to fame in part due to her breakout role as Kathy Selden in Singin’ in the Rain, but was also the mother of late Carrie Fisher, whom we all know as Princess Leia of Star Wars.
It’s all the more poignant a tribute if one considers that it was originally made 12 years ago, before either Debbie Reynolds or Carrie Fisher had passed away. We’d like to think they had the chance to see this remarkable tribute. It’s as strong a performance today as it was when we first brought it to you all those years ago, and these performers are all triple threats: acting, singing and dancing.
These three of the iconic characters from Star Wars are potrayed by the dashing Kooper Campbell as a singing and tap dancing Han Solo, Luke Rands as a tap dancing Chewbacca (who manages to present a wonderful performance despite being fully hidden in a massively hairy walking carpet costume), and the charming and sunny Camrey Bagley as a singing and tap dancing Princess Leia.
Fans dispute the date of Star Wars Day. The original release date for the movie Star Wars, was May 25, 1977, but the late Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of England, immortalized May 4 as the date when she was congratulated on her win to be PM with a pun that said “May the Fourth Be With You”.
This isn’t just a quick funny knock-off, either. These remarkable performers have studied the entire sequence from Singing in the Rain and recreated the choreography down to the last move. It’s gorgeously edited, and creates a smooth, continous jaw-dropping performance from the trio.
It’s even presented in 1.375 Academy aspect ratio, just like the original movie Singin’ in the Rain from 1952 film, instead of the 16:9 ratio of width to height we’re all accustomed to seeing these days.
This is entertainment at its best. It is unabashedly innocent and honest, full of simple joy, and yet an astonishingly sophisticated performance.
Luke, Keeper and Camrey dedicate this film to Debbie Reynolds, mother and daughter, who brought joy to so many throughout the world and who will forever hold a place in our hearts.
It’s the perfect thing to bring you on this Star Wars Day. May the Force Be With You.
Oh, and yes, there’s a blooper reel.
