In the contract negotiations for the first film, Irving had his agent write it into the contract that each time he appeared on screen, actors had to use his full name. Despite director Ishiro Honda's objections, the contract was signed, but on the first day it quickly became apparent that it was killing the pacing of the scenes to do this, and the actors were stumbling over the line. They reached a compromise, and only Irving's first initials ended up being used.This is why characters in the films always react to the sight of the big guy with the phrase, "I.E.
