Earth unleashes a cosmic plague, threatening all life in the universe that has a y in their name who are friendly but incomprehensible even though they have seen every episode of Firefly and cannot be destroyed by a nuclear bomb , but scientists create a new weapon which does not work but they die from catching the common cold.
