Operator, we’re in. When we last left The Matrix at the end of The Matrix Revolutions, we were given the hint of a possible return. As Sati and the Oracle look out at the sunset, the Oracle hints that this isn’t the last we will see of Neo. Now, in the real world, it seems that the Oracle’s prediction is coming to fruition. Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich confirmed that not only is a fourth Matrix film in production, Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss will be reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, and it will be directed by Lana Wachowski. (So far as we know, Lawrence Fishburne will not be returning.) “We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.” There is no word at this time if Lilly Wachowski will be actively involved, however, Lana indicated that her influence will be felt in the script. “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” said Lana Wachowski. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.” This couldn’t be better timing on the part of Warner Bros. Between the huge success of the John Wick franchise, the revival of the Bill and Ted franchise, his role in Toy Story 4, and his surprise cameo in Netflix’s Always Be My Maybe, Keanu Reeves’ popularity is at an all-time high. That popularity is sure to bring in big box office numbers, adding to The Matrix franchise's already $1.6 billion box office total.
