Disney’s iconic fairy Tinker Bell from Peter Pan is getting the live-action television treatment.

Disney+ is developing Tink, a drama series featuring the character. It will be written and executive produced by Liz Heldens and Bridget Carpenter, with Gary Marsh as the third executive producer, and Quinn Haberman from Heldens’ production company Selfish Mermaid as the fourth. The series is being developed for Disney’s 20th Television.

Heldens and Carpenter are longtime friends who worked together on the Friday Night Lights series. Heldens, who started her TV career on Boston Public, became a co-exec producer of the football drama series before creating NBC medical drama Mercy, ABC crime drama Deception, Fox sci-fi thriller The Passage, NBC dramedy Camp and Fox’s The Big Leap. She has also exec produced Fox’s The Orville and Hulu’s The Dropout and is currently co-showrunner on ABC’s Will Trent, which is in its fourth season.

Tinker Bell made her first appearance in Disney’s 1953 animated movie Peter Pan. Her character design walked the line between child friendly and naughty/spicey, and has appeared in countless movies and television series over the past 70 years. Her portrayals have been mostly animated, but she’s been played by live action actors before.

Notable live-action actresses who have portrayed Tinker Bell include Yara Shahidi (Peter Pan & Wendy), Julia Roberts (Hook), Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time), and Ludivine Sagnier (Peter Pan 2003). Other notable portrayals include Keira Knightley in the Neverland miniseries and Paloma Faith in Peter & Wendy.

Disney has been bouncing around the idea of a Tinkerbell series for some time. A live-action feature named Tink was in development in 2015, with Reese Witherspoon set to play the title role. The idea was given new life in 2021 by Gary Marsh, when he, then President and Chief Creative Officer at Disney Branded Television, stepped down and set up his own Disney-backed banner.

It is early days yet, so there is no information available on how many episodes there will be, how long it will take to make them, or who will be starring in it. This is their big opportunity to make something iconic. Tinker Bell is one of the most valuable characters Disney has. Let’s see what happens.
