Each year, the Ohio Valley Filk Festival (OVFF) hosts the Pegasus Award for Excellence in Filking. These awards recognize the most beloved and respected songwriters, performers and songs within the filk (science fiction folk) music community.

Prometheus Music now has released Pegasus Nominees, Volume 1: Songs of Space, Science & Science Fiction.” This project seeks to make these often-obscure, award-nominated songs, songwriters and performers broadly accessible to science fiction fans at large.

This professionally produced and carefully curated album brings together storytelling songs on themes of space, science and science fiction.

Performers and songwriters reflect a mix of professional SF authors active in the filking community (such as Seanan McGuire & Ada Palmer), as well as notable members of the filk community, such as Leslie Fish, Michael Longcor, Vixy & Tony, Bill & Brenda Sutton, Tom Smith, and many others.

Tracks reflect a combination of live performances at OVFF (1996-2022) with additional studio recordings. Some are re-envisionings of beloved filksongs such as “Fire in the Sky” (by the late rocket scientist and fan, Jordin Kare). Others are newer songs, such as Bob Kanefsky’s “Six Transit Genitalia Centauri” bawdy Babylon 5 parody, which hilariously explores Centauri genitalia.

If you’re already a fan of the filk genre (or have been one in the past), you’ll find lots to reconnect with here. Or if you’re an SF fan curious about filk music, this album offers a perfect entry point.

Pegasus Nominees, Volume 1: Songs of Space, Science & Science Fiction is now available for sale by CD and for download from Prometheus Music. It can also be found on all major streaming platforms, such as Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc.

Please note: This project is independently produced, and is not formally affiliated with the Ohio Valley Filk Festival.
