Jason Momoa will star in PlayStation Productions and Sony Pictures’ film adaptation of Helldivers, based on Arrowhead Game Studios’ video game franchise.
Helldivers 2‘s story centers around an elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy all of human civilization, centering on the fictional planet of Super Earth. The whole thing plays like the video game version of Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, and features a great deal of tongue in cheek military propaganda. It debuted in 2015 and the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in the first four months after its 2024 launch. The game recently expanded to Xbox and continues to perform.
Momoa recently turned up as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, coming to theaters June 26.
We are going to be seeing a lot of Momoa this year as well. He’s in Amazon MGM Studio’s The Wrecking Crew right now on Amazon’s Prime Video. On May1, Warner Bros. releases the hybrid animated movie Animal Friends with Ryan Reynolds, and Momoa is in that. He’s also going to be Blanka in Legendary/Paramount’s Street Fighter, due out October 16, and in the hybrid animated feature Animal Friends opposite Ryan Reynolds on On May 1, He’s also taking on the iconic role of Blanka in Street Fighter out October 16, and he’s back on the screen just two months later as Duncan Idaho in Dune: Part Three on December 18. That’s a whole lotta Momoa.
Actors — especially character actors and action stars, and Momoa is both — have a limited shelf life career-wise. Momoa clearly knows this and is trying to pack in as much work as he can while he can still ride the wave. His agents Brandt Joel and Patrick Whitesell are doing an outstanding job on his behalf.
Momoa previously played Aquaman in Warner Bros’ DC universe across two movies directed by James Wan. He starred as Dante in Fast X, which Lin wrote and produced. Last year, Momoa starred in Warner Bros/Legendary’s near $1 billion grossing A Minecraft Movie. He is also famous for his portrayal of Khal Drogo on HBO’s Game of Thrones. He most recently starred and co-created Apple TV+ limited series Chief of War.
Currently, Helldivers is the only major studio wide film scheduled for release on the November 10 date in 2027. Justin Lin is set to direct.
