Watching Academy Award winning actor Key Hu Quan demonstrate the new $330 LEGO Goonies playset is too charming by half.
Quan relives his adventures with the Goonies as they search for One-Eyed Willy’s treasure aboard the lost pirate ship Inferno, one scene at a time, as he demonstrates all the cool features of this new LEGO kit. There are six separate scenes in all, many with action features. The set is comprised of 2912 pieces, and comes with 12 Minifigs depicting all the important characters from the original 1980s cult classic movie.
This amazing kit was designed by original Fan Designer Vaggelis Ntezes, also known as Delusion Brick, as well as Anthony Palamaro, Senior Graphic Designer and Marina Stampoli, Senior Model Designer at the LEGO Group. Also, part of the design team was Markus Rollbühler, who took over the model design development from Marina when she was away.

Meet the gang
If you’re going to recreate movie scenes, then you need the cast of characters. And this set won’t disappoint. It comes with 12 LEGO® minifigures, including Mike “Mikey” Walsh, Richard “Data” Wang, Clark “Mouth” Devereaux, Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen, Mama Fratelli, Andrea “Andy” Carmichael and One-Eyed Willy.
“The cast of The Goonies consists mostly of kids, all of them with very different and adorable characteristics,” says Marina. “So, we couldn’t exclude any of them! It wouldn’t be an adventure without ‘bad guys’, so we also included the Fratellis, and our story wouldn’t have been complete without the legendary pirate and expert obstacle course designer, One-Eyed Willy. The minifigures have a variety of accessories, like Data’s spy contraptions, or Mouth’s hairbrush, because he has to look cool even when bad guys are chasing him inside a cave! We even designed new elements for Sloth’s pirate hat and bandana, and Mama Fratelli’s hair and beret.”

Discover the Inferno pirate ship
The set has the external shell of the pirate ship, which is obviously from the movie, but it also recalls one of Vaggelis’ favorite themes from his childhood.
“My favorite theme of all time is Pirates,” he says. “I consider the 1989 Pirates sets as one of the best LEGO® themes that have affected me not only consciously, but subconsciously as well.”

Enter the Fratellis’ hideaway
Use the treasure map element to find your way to the hideaway of the bad guys. When you do, you’ll start to see the many Easter eggs the team included in the build.
“There are so many that were included and even more that were not included,” says Anthony. “Some we snuck in were the Fratellis’ printing press in the basement, the brown water Mama Fratelli offers the gang and the Wanted poster of the Fratellis.”

Use the Copper Bones Skeleton Key
Once you’ve found the hideaway, you can send a minifigure through the secret fireplace entrance to the caves and the pirate ship. Inside, you could even use the Copper Bones Skeleton Key to reveal the hidden trapdoor.
“I watched the movie multiple times, to make sure we would capture all the details!” says Marina.

Push keys on the skeleton organ
“If you hit the wrong note, we’ll all ‘B-flat’!” Press the keys on the skeleton organ to break the floor and access the slide to the Inferno’s hideaway, where the octopus (from a deleted scene) is hiding. Every little detail is designed to remind you of the movie and to help you have an adventure of your own.
“The team and I were always looking to add storytelling to the build,” says Anthony. “And to see how we could include jokes and nods through graphics, and include our favorite scenes!”

Find One-Eyed Willie’s lost treasure
While the Goonies get their hands on the gold, for many people, this movie has become a piece of treasure all of its own.
“For me, it’s the friendship between the characters and this grand adventure they go on!” says Anthony. “It touches so many childhood fantasies of uncovering a hidden pirate map, discovering secrets, avoiding booby traps… and ultimately finding TREASURE!”
Marina agrees. “For people who grew up in the 80s, it brings a lot of nostalgia and memories of innocent times, friendship and adventures!”
Whether you remember seeing the movie back in the 80s or if you’re a newer fan, you can now go on your very own adventure thanks to Vaggelis, our team and the LEGO® Ideas The Goonies set.

As LEGO sets go, this one is one of their bigger ones, but at 2912 pieces it doesn’t approach the size of their biggest. With 11,000 pieces, the Map of the World (no longer sold) is the biggest by parts count, followed by the Eiffel Tower at 10,001 pieces. The Titanic comes in at 9,090 pieces.
We don’t start to see sci-fi or fantasy models in the top ten until we get to the LEGO Deathstar model at 9,023 pieces, to create a model of the Deathstar that’s a bit over two feet across. The Millenium Falcon, slightly smaller, comes in at 7,541 pieces, followed by the Mandalorian’s Razor Crest at 6,187. Then there’s the Rivendell playset from Lord of the Rings at 6,167.
Prices for the big sets range from $999 for the Deathstar down to $370 for the Ninjago Market playset.
Ke Huy Quan comments: “Revisiting Data after all these years – but this time in LEGO form – has been such a joyful experience. The Goonies was all about heart, adventure, and friendship, and this set captures that spirit in fantastic detail. From the booby traps to the treasure room, it’s like stepping back into the tunnels with the gang – only now, I get to share that magic with a whole new generation of fans.”
