Twice a year, the monarch of the U. K. honors the worthy of the realm by bestowing knighthoods or other honors on them. Traditionally knighthoods were limited to warriors, explorers, ambassadors. In the 21st century, the king’s knights include actors, singers (SirRoger Daltrey), athletes (Sir David Beckham) Buckingham Palace has recently announced the king’s birthday honors list. Of greatest interest to SciFi.Radio fans is the addition of Sir Gary Oldman.
Oldman, who shall now be officially known as Sir Gary Oldman, said that was he “gobsmacked” by receiving the award of knighthood.
“It’s actually sort of mind-boggling. I’m gobsmacked,” Oldman said.
Sir Gary Oldman also said the following in an official statement regarding the news of his knighthood:
“To be included in the long lineage of extraordinary actors, artists, and others who hold this title fills me with indescribable humility and pride. It is emotional, humbling and flattering all at the same time to be recognized amongst them.”
The Independent described Sir Gary in 2011 as the greatest British actor of his generation. Apparently, King Charles III and his advisors agree with that assessment.
Sir Gary has had an impressive variety of roles in the science fiction, science fantasy and fantasy genres, including playing Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather and distant cousin in the Harry Potter movies. He also played Count Dracula in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) and Gotham City Police Commissioner Jim Gordon in three Batman movies—and of course, he made the quintessential villian in the fan favorite and cult classic, The Fifth Element (1997) opposite Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich. In his younger days, he played a lot of villains. Most recently, he seems to be specializing in playing spies.
