What is a Spook Show?

A “spook show,” also known as a “midnight ghost show,” “midnight spook show,” “voodoo show,” or “monster show,” is a kind of live stage show that originated in the United States during the Great Depression. They were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. It often featured illusions, séances, and audience interaction, culminating in a “blackout” sequence, and frequently included horror films before or after the live performance. The spook show is always led by a host or ghostmaster who leads the show. The ghost shows found a new audience on television, with hosts like Svengoolie and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. and the Cryptkeeper.
