Jason Momoa, star of Warner Bros and DC‘s Aquaman films, has been tapped to play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, SCIFI.radio has confirmed.
It doesn’t take much imagination to picture Mamoa in the iconic role of Lobo. His normal speech patterns, his mannerisms, all scream Lobo. This was frankly a no-brainer. Momoa himself has been linked to the Lobo role since before James Gunn came in to lead DC alongside Peter Safran. He’s been vocal in the past about his interest in the part and today confirmed his attachment to the role in a post on Instagram, where he screenshotted comments from a past interview.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” said the actor. Momoa went on to say that should DC come around asking him to play Lobo, it would be “a f*ck yeah.” Alongside the Instagram screenshot, Momoa posted a caption this morning that reads, “They called.”
Lobo is an antihero in DC Comics. He’s essentially a rowdy, violent irreverent space biker, the sole survivor of the apocalypse that destroyed all life on his home planet Czarnia. The trouble was that Lobo himself was that apolalypse. He possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and is almost completely invulnerable. First introduced in Omega Men #3 in june of 1983 and created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is frequently depicted as a bounty hunter who enjoys chaos and destruction.
Plot details for the new Supergirl are under wraps, but it’s based on Tom King’s 2022 DC comicbook series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, as illustrated by Bilquis Evely. As previously reported, House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock landed the title role after a long search, with Matthias Schoenaerts boarding as villain Krem of the Yellow Hill. More recently, Eve Ridley came on to play the part of Ruthye Mary Knolle. DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce. Production starts on January 13, 2025.
Warner Bros and DC hold Jason Momoa in high regard after his two Aquaman films collectively earned over $1.5 billion at the global box office. The actor’s upcoming Warner Bros projects include A Minecraft Movie, slated for release on April 4, and Legendary’s hybrid live-action/animated film Animal Friends. Momoa’s future slate also features Fast X: Part 2, Apple’s miniseries Chief of War, and The Wrecking Crew for Amazon MGM, where he’ll star alongside Dave Bautista.
