The day is finally here: James Gunn’s official teaser trailer for Superman, starring David Corenswet in the title role, is ready for you to watch. Here. Now.
Superman (originally titled Superman: Legacy) follows the titular superhero as he reconciles his heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way in a world that views this as old-fashioned. Written and directed by James Gunn, it stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisando as Jimmy Olsen, James’ brother Sean as Maxwell Lord, Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nathan Fillion has been cast as Guy Gardner. Alan Tudyk is in it as well, but his role hasn’t been named, so we assume that he’s going to be playing a major character, probably a villain. If we had to guess, we’d guess it’s Metamorpho. Let’s see if we’re right.
In the trailer, we see glimpses of the DC heroic universe already in progress. Mister Terrific is there. So is Hawkgirl, and Guy Gardner. Superman is not universally loved in this film, nor is he supremely invulnerable. He can get banged up, and it’s wonderful to see Krypto in the opening scene helping him out. Hearing the original John Williams Superman March rendered in soaring guitar makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.
All of this suggests that director Gunn is breaking with tradition on Superman movies by not kicking things off with Yet Another Take On His Origin Story, and frankly, a lot of us were holding our collective breaths to see if he was going to avoid that pitfall. But no, this new DCU, under the curatorship of Gunn, kicks things off with the known heroic universe already in progress. He wants to hit the ground running, and if Superman does as well as he hopes, the new DCU will fly. And if it doesn’t, it won’t.
Gunn has said he has been miserable during production, in part because of the weight of the responsibility on his shoulders that he feels every single day. He gets it.
Notably, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, the original creators of the central character of Superman, have writing credit before James Gunn does.
Superman: Legacy is tentatively scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
