Actor Tony Todd, best known for his title role in the Candyman horror films, has died at the age of 69, and with his passing we have lost one of the world’s iconic actors.
Born in Washington, DC, in 1954, Todd was raised in Connecticut, where he first developed his passion for acting. His significant contributions to horror cinema, particularly his leading role in 1992’s Candyman, led to his recognition with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York City Horror Film Festival.
With his rich baritone voice, Todd was popular for voicework. His vocal roles included Scare Glow in Masters of the Universe: Revolution, Venom in the Spider-Man 2 video game, Zoom in The Flash TV series, the Arrowverse series with Grant Gustin, not the older Flash series with John Wesley Shipp, and Slyrak in Dota: Dragon’s Blood. He voiced Decepticon Dreadwing on Transformers: Prime, and Icon in Young Justice. He provided the voice of Daekseid in five separate DC productions. In the video game Star Trek Online, Todd voiced General Rodek, a Klingon military leader, and on both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, he played Worf’s brother Kurn..

Tony Todd’s geek cred was extensive. In addition to playing a Klingon warrior on Star Trek, Tony Todd appeared in the sci-fi film, The Man from Earth (2007). Todd co-starred in The Bunker (2024). He had a recurring role on Stargate SG-1 as Lord Haikon. In addition to playing Kurn in the Star Trek universe, he once portrayed an adult Jake Sisko on DS9. He starred in The Change (2021).
Other Sci-Fi and fantasy roles include Gilgamesh on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Cecrops on Xena, Warrior Princess, and Alpha Hirogen on Star Trek: Voyager.He played the demon Vyasa on one episode of Angel. He was a guest on yhe ’80s horror show Werewolf. In Frankenstein (2015), Todd played Eddie, the blind homeless man who befriends the monster.
He also appeared in Night of the Living Dead (1990), Realm of Shadows (2024), Final Destination (2000), and The Crow (1994). He appeared in the horror movie Stream (2024). He starred in The Lockdown Hauntings (2021). Todd appeared in Death House (2015) as Asa, the Farmer.
Tony Todd co-starred in the psychological thriller The Activated Man (2023). He appeared in the Sir Sean Connery movie The Rock (1996). Todd appeared in Platoon (1986). Todd starred in the western mini-series Black Fox.
Anthony Todd was born December 4, 1954, in Washington, DC, USA. He died November 6, 2024, in Los Angeles, California. An official cause of death has not been released yet, but as he died in his own home, we may surmise that he died of natural causes. He is survived by his wife Fatima, two children, and his sister actress Monique Dupree. To his family, we offer our comfort and our deepest condolences.
