Where the foam rubber meets the road …
After calling a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun, uptight yuppie Conor Sweeney must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin FRANKIE FREAKO.
What would happen if you combined the production values available in the 21st century with the practical effects of the 90’s? You get Frankie Freako. This film is a tribute to film franchises like Gremlins and Ghoulies, with some strong Garbage Pail Kids influence. It has notes of the Rocky Horror Picture show in its juxtaposition of the super-normal with the campy horror of a fantasy universe, except this time we get to see that alternate world in all its twisted, yucky glory. There aren’t many special effects makeup films around anymore, and Frankie Freako steps into that void with all the grace and aplomb afforded to full body foam rubber puppets.
Frankie Freako himself is a party animal, and almost more animal than party. He tempts Sweeney with a good time without letting on exactly what he’ll be in for, and all Hell breaks loose. The trick now is getting Hell back where it belongs. It’s up to Sweeney to save the world, and all before Kristine gets back from her trip away.
Frankie Freako is written, produced, directed and edited by Steven Kostanski, with Melanie Murray and Pasha Patriki as co-producers. It stars Conor Sweeney as Conor, Kristy Wordsworth as his wife Kristina, and Matthew Kennedy as the voice of Frankie. The film is the production of Hanger 18 Media, and it’s distributed by Shout! Studios. It released in Canada on July 24, 2024 at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and goes into open release in the United States on October 4, 2024.
