James Gunn promised us an amazing third installment to the Guardians of the Galaxy film series, and he’s delivering. Watch the trailer.

Still reeling from the loss of Gamora, Peter Quill rallies his team to defend the universe and one of their own — a mission that could mean the end of the Guardians if not successful. The High Evolutionary is apparently the Big Bad in this film, though we see Chudwudi Iwuji, the actor who plays him, for only a split second in the trailer.

A good deal of the story has to do with Adam Warlock as well, yet there is no footage on Will Poulter in this trailer at all regarding that part of the plot. We’ll have to wait for future trailers to see any hints of him.

Gamora does feature prominently in the story, though it’s unclear from the trailer as to whether she is somehow reunited with the team despite having been sacrificed by Thanos on the planet Vormir so he can get his hands on the Soul Stone. Never the less, they could branch Gamora’s timeline by plucking her from her original one before those events took place — in a different version of her reality, she would still die by Thanos’ hand, so there would be no time paradox.

It even looks like Rocket is getting the backstory he deserves, and somehow it appears to involve an Uplifted otter.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is set for a premiere on May 5, 2023.
