The first full trailer for HBO Max’s Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon is here, and it’s eye candy.

House of the Dragon is an upcoming American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and is based on Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen; the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen civil war, known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”

The score by Ramin Djawadi sounds tremendous, just what we need for a story that we hope is all about dragons. We love dragons.

The trailer lays out the story pretty effectively. Some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, King Viserys I Targaryen wants to make his daughter Rhaenyra his heir, which pleases some people and ticks off others, particularly the king’s volatile younger brother Daemon (Matt Smith). Rhaenyra grows up assuming she will be inherit the Iron Throne, but there’s a challenge in the form of her friend Alicent Hightower, who ends up marrying her dad and has a son whom she would rather see take the throne.

The show definitely does look dark and foreboding. This is a tragedy on an epic scale, so that’s appropriate.

House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019. Principal photography began in April 21, 2021, and it’s scheduled to premiere on August 21, 2022. Its first season will consist of ten episodes.
