The undead are on notice: Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg just got assigned to the Day Shift.

The trailer for Day Shift gives us our first look at a new direct-to-stream Netflix horror film starring Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and Dave Franco. The directorial debut of stuntman and second unit director J.J. Perry, Day Shift is about the life of Bud Jablonski (Foxx), a blue collar resident of Southern California who needs to get back on his feet financially to provide for his young daughter. To do that, he has to hold down a seemingly mundane job at a pool cleaning company. In truth, the position is more than it seems, and a little more challenging that simply clearing out filters and dumping chlorine.

Turns out Jablonski’s place of employment is a front for a union of vampire hunters. It’s a good way to make some real money, real fast, but Jablonski’s been out of the game for a bit … and he has a history of getting messy. Even for his particular line of work.

Brought back into the fold by Big John Elliot (Dogg), Jablonski has one last chance to make good with the union, or he’s up the well known creek without a paddle. Paired with an obvious desk jockey, Seth (Franco), can Jablonski keep his nose clean and stay alive while trying to earn a living for his family? Or will another “incident” send him back to the trenches while the mother of his child moves his little girl to Florida?

If the movie lives up to the trailer, finding out that answer looks to be a wild, and incredibly entertaining ride. Speaking as a native of the San Fernando Valley, the visuals showcased in this trailer speak to a beautifully true-to-life version of the everyday Valley I know even beneath its theatrical exaggeration. The dichotomy of a vampire infestation in sunny Southern California is also a wonderful device, making me really curious about the lore of this world.

There’s also no shortage of humor in the trailer, which will hopefully be present throughout the movie. The wimpy bureaucrat of Franco’s character against Foxx’s hard, no nonsense working man promises a really fun buddy comedy dynamic in an otherwise fairly straightforward horror action film. Add to that the absolutely perfect element of Snoop Dogg with a machine gun, and you have a real formula for success.

It’s Snoop Dogg. With a machine gun. What more could you want in a movie of any sort?

Day Shift makes its Netflix debut on August 12th.
