HAL JORDAN IS DEAD.

Long Live our newest Green Lantern of Earth, John Stewart!

In a new Green Lantern animated movie, Green Lantern: Beware My Power, former sniper, John Stewart, becomes a novice Green Lantern.

After a dynamic crash landing a Guardian delivers a ring after the untimely demise of Hal Jordan and dozens of other Green Lanterns in an attack on their planet of Oa. (Is Hal Jordan really dead? I guess we will have to wait and see.) He’s dead enough for a Guardian to initiate a failsafe in case of no Green Lantern in the Earth sector which is designated sector 2814 on the Corps coordinate mapping system.

In the canon comic lore, John Stewart was a designated backup, though he was unaware of the singular honor. In this movie, a Guardian delivers a Power Ring to John Stewart then dying before his eyes. For those of you who aren’t sure who the Guardians are, suffice it to say, if you can kill one, you are something to be afraid of. Beings of immense physic might, the Guardians are some of the oldest and most capable beings in the entire DC Universe.

As the trailer continues, it appears John will ask the Justice League for assistance against the threat. Right after he proves he isn’t a danger to what appears to be a fairly classic lineup of the League which shows us the Martian Manhunter, Vixen, Hawkgirl, Adam Strange and Green Arrow. Presumably there will be others. If not, I expect brutality as the Thanagarians take their war very seriously.

This appears to be a space adventure with a nascent John Stewart thrown right into the deep end of the pool fighting against the Yellow Lanterns who are lead by former Green Lantern, master strategist and full time demagogue, Thall Sinestro of Korugar. Sinestro, who once worked for the Guardians as a Green Lantern is disgraced and thrown out when he takes over his homeworld using the limitless capacities of his Power Ring.

Ejected from the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro travels the Universe for a power capable of rivaling the Green Energy and finds it in the Antimatter Universe where an ancient species creates weapons of mass destruction including their own version of the Power Ring. Now with a corps of his own, Thaal Sinestro has returned, having armed a force of his own choosing, likely with some of the most dangerous and fearsome beings in the galaxy on his payroll.

What chance does a rookie Green Lantern have against the ilk of Thaal Sinestro and the entire Yellow Lantern Corps? Plenty. If he can wrangle the likes of the war-loving Thanagarians and their mysterious Nth Metal and can convince the very capable members of the Justice League to bring the battle directly to Korugar.

This is the first trailer for a new animated feature from DC Entertainment: Green Lantern: Beware My Power. The film’s Supervising Producer is Butch Lukic. I am thrilled to see John Stewart getting a chance at a big screen animated movie. I look forward to the next trailer.

Prepare yourself for the Sinestro Wars in July!
