The Fraggles are back—and this time, they brought friends: namely, Dave Grohl and the rest of the Foo Fighters.

Celebrating the release of the Fraggle Rock revival, Fraggle Rock: Back To The Rock, the Foo Fighters penned their own updated version of the tune “Fraggle Rock Rock,” complete with a music video filmed alongside the legendary characters themselves. The song, which comes from the second episode of the original series, was one of the many musical numbers the show was famous for and was about a literal jailbreak from a cage trapping the Fraggles.

In this music video, the Foo Fighters have turned this cheerful little bop into a solid hard rock anthem full of heavy riffs and raw vocals, but have imbued the tune with the same free spirited fun and enthusiasm of the original. To be frank, this would not feel out of place on a Foo Fighters album, but remains a classic that’s great for children at the same time, a fact for which Grohl and the rest of the group deserve to be applauded.

It’s fitting that the Foo Fighters are behind this cover, as they are members of the same generation likely brought up on the likes of the Fraggles, the Doozers, and the Gorgs. While this revival was borne on the series of shorts titled Fraggle Rock: Rock On!, the original Fraggle Rock first aired in 1983, running for five seasons and only just falling short of the magic one hundred episode landmark at ninety six episodes.

A product of the legendary Jim Henson, the show featured these three main races of creatures. First are the Fraggles, fun loving and adventurous little creatures who live in a series of interconnected caves that form the titular community of Fraggle Rock. Then there are the Doozers, the hardworking little race consumed with endless construction of structures made of beams formed from a radish-based compound Fraggles find delicious and nibble on constantly. Above ground, you have the Gorgs, a family of humanoid creatures who believe they rule the Universe and run the radish farm where the Fraggles find their main food source.

There is also, of course, the fourth race in this world: the Silly Creatures from Outer Space – aka, humans. It is from the waste basket of a local human where the Fraggles must regularly retrieve postcards from Uncle Traveling Matt, a Fraggle who roams the world looking for adventure and knowledge, which he sends home in his postcards to Fraggle Rock. Often, the Fraggles are chased by the human’s dog, who tries and fails to clue his owner into the existence of the fuzzy little creatures that live behind a hole in the wall.

In the video, we’re treated to all of our familiar Fraggle friends, as well as a few Doozers making a special appearance. Pragmatic Gobo, indecisive Wembley, the free spirited Red, artistic and philosophical Mopey, superstitious Boober, and even Uncle Traveling Matt have all returned for the revival. There’s even a glimpse of the Fraggle’s resident sage and wise woman, Marjory—a sentient compost, or trash, heap with two rat-like companions, Philo and Gunge. While the Fraggles are all there to enjoy the show, Uncle Traveling Matt repeatedly tries to get in on the performance and attempts to steal the show, only to be escorted out by security at the end of the video.

To any with fond memories of the original series, it’s a delightful bit of nostalgia that does well in whetting the appetite for a look at Back To The Rock, which is out now on Apple TV. The first season consists of thirteen episodes, and features many guest appearances from celebrities like Kenan Thompson, Patti LaBelle, Ed Helms – and, of course, the Foo Fighters appearing in one episode as themselves.

Now, if you’ll all excuse me, it’s time to let the music play—down at Fraggle Rock.
