YouTube artist Joseph James brings us a mashup of Britney Spear’s Hit Me Baby, One More Time and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit from the movie Encanto, We Don’t Talk About Bruno.

A hit, you say? Surprisingly — or perhaps unsurprisingly — yes! We Don’t Talk About Bruno has already enjoyed the top spot in the U.K., and is currently holds the number two spot in the United States. Only Adele’s Easy on Me tops it, sitting comfortably in the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

We Don’t Talk About Bruno is arguably the lynchpin song in Encanto, and works on so many levels that it’s hard to know where to begin talking about it. It’s the perfect fusion of Columbian rhythms and melodic techniques, and tells an important story element in the film. Even the name of the character, Bruno, was chosen by Miranda because it worked better lyrically than any of the other choices.

Britney Spears, of course, had a massive hit with Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, and the song not only cemented her fame on the world stage, but carries many of the same latin influences that make We Don’t Talk About Bruno such an earworm.

Don’t believe me? Then why does this video work so well?

Hit Me, Baby, One More Time was written for Britney Spears by Max Martin. We Don’t Talk About Bruno was written, of course, by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

We air more than a few mashups here on SCIFI.radio, and we’re pleased to add this clever bit of musical prestidigitation to our regular airplay. It’s actually a bit scary how well it works. Enjoy.
