Dream is captured in a magic circle, with his cloak of black, a helmet forged from the skull of an old enemy, a pouch of sand that puts mortals to sleep, and the ruby that allows him to transform dreams into reality.

Here is a tantallizing first look at the first full trailer for The Sandman, based on the beloved comic book series written by Neil Gaiman. It gives us only a small hint of what is to come, showing the villain Roderick Burgess (played by Charles Dance) capturing Dream (Tom Sturridge) in a magic circle. The series (as yet with no release date) comes to us by way of Netflix.

The Lord of Dreams has been summoned, and captured, by mortal men. Once free from his captivity, this eternal ruler of Dreams will realize that his troubles are only just beginning.

The series is described as: “A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he’s made during his vast existence.”

Originally published across 75 monthly comics and one special, The Sandman was the flagship title of DC Comics’ Vertigo line for adults for years and inspired a number of spin-off series. The series introduced The Endless, seven personifications of primal forces like Death and Destiny, eternal spirits of god-like power, but distinct from the rest of the DC Comics universe.

Here is Neil Gaiman showing his appreciation for the production team and their creation of the sets and effects that bring The Undercroft — the dungeon in which Dream is imprisoned for 70 years — from Gaiman’s imagination and the pages of the comic books to reality.

This is Sandman being made, for people who love Sandman, by people who love Sandman, and I cannot wait until people see this.
