1st Look: ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ Official Trailer

Sony Pictures has released a brand new trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and it’s everything we wanted.

This time the Ghostbusters’ legacy is in good hands. The film is directed by Jason Reitman, son of producer and director of the original Ghostbusters 1984 film, Ivan Reitman. The screenplay comes courtey of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan. In sharp constrast to the 2016 Ghostbusters movie, this one appears to have the heart and soul of the original.

In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

There is a lot to unpack here. A bunch of the original Ghostbusters actors reprise their roles in this ectoplasmic spectacle, including Dan Akroyd as Dr. Raymond Stantz, Ernie Hudson as Dr. Winston Zeddmore, Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman (Harold Ramis passed away in 2014). Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and even Annie Potts as Janine Melnitz. The kids are played by Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard (Trevor), and The Haunting of Hill House’s McKenna Grace (Phoebe), along with a kid who goes by the name of Podcast, played by Logan Kim. Leftovers star Carrie Coon plays the mom. The enabling adult is played by Paul Rudd (Mr. Grooberson), who just so happens to have been a huge fan of the original Ghostbusters back in New York.

The kids take center stage in this film, and drive the story – and that seems right. The original actors aren’t exactly action movie material anymore, and if the franchise is going to move forward, it needs new actors who can grow into the roles.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was originally due to release in July of 2020, but, you know – pandemic. The film now comes to theaters November 11, 2021.
