Disney takes advantage of Gargoyles’ new audience by authorizing a new game, Disney Gargoyles: Awakening.
One of the advantages of investing in the Disney streaming service Disney +, is not only access to new shows like WandaVision and The Mandalorian, but old favorites that had been locked in the Vault, like Gargoyles, which ran from 1994 to 1996 for 78 episodes. There is a vast pool of creative work to mine for creating new games and toys.
The choice of a board game is something of a surprise – most of the money seems to be in video games, and the last time there was a Gargoyles game released for the SegaGenesis system back in 1995, so the timing seemed right for a new console offering. Board gaming, though, has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, so the timing of a project like Disney Gargoyles: Awakening couldn’t be better.
Our distinguished colleagues at ComicBook.com “confirm that Ravensberger will release Disney Gargoyles: Awakening, a co-op board game for 2-5 players.”
The new board game is for two to five players, and recommended for ages ten and older. Players will take control of one of six characters: either the gargoyles Goliath, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, Hudson, or human NYPD Detective Elisa Maza. The game will take “place on a 3D cityscape board of Manhattan as seen in the show, complete with show landmarks like Xanatos’ castle-topped skyscraper or the police clock tower.” The game will go on sale at Target on August 1st, 2021. It is unknown at this time if it will remain exclusive to Target or expand to other stores.
Ravenberger also produces games based on Disney’s Hocus Pocus, the Jungle Cruise Adventure, which also inspired a new movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Disney’s Villains, and Raya and the Last Dragon, which will debut March 5, 2021. Florian Baldenhofer, the Executive Vice President at Ravenberger North America, said, “As a beloved story with a passionate fanbase, Gargoyles is a perfect fit for our catalog. Our team has wanted to create an immersive Gargoyles game for years, and with the resurgence of interest thanks to Disney+, there’s never been a better time to feature it.” Ravensberger also makes puzzles and science kits in addition to boardgames.
Disney Gargoyles: Awakening has four different scenarios, so the game can be played more than once. In “Reawakening,” players face off against millionaire David Xanatos and gargoyle Demona to save Coldstone’s mind. In “Temptation and Magic,” Demona has stolen the ancient Grimorum Arcanorum and uses the book’s magic to enslave innocents. Players must collect three stolen data disks in “Information Warfare.” Finally, in “Battle with the Steel Clan,” one player takes the role of Xanatos and the Steel Clan and tries to either defeat a hero or destroy the police tower while the other players (as the Gargoyles) try to defeat Xanatos.
The manufactor’s suggested retail price for Disney Gargoyles: Awakening is $34.99 before tax. Are you looking forward to playing this? If you have Disney +, are you watching Gargoyles? Will you be adding this game to your holiday wish list?
