The first full trailer for the new Marvel Studios TV series Wandavision is here, featuring Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as The Vision, reprising their roles from the Avengers movies – and as bizarre as the premise sounded, the trailer is weird as a snake’s shoes. Reality is as pliable as the bioplastic that makes up the Vision’s face in this strange, retro-sitcom mini-series. The couple drifts through several points in time in post-war America’s history, their costumes reflecting how they would have appeared in the comic books from each era. How they deal with each time and place, and each situation as they try to fit in and function as though they’re just a normal, American couple – where one of them has metaphysical powers and the other is a superpowerful android – appears to be as much the point to the series as what exactly is happening to them as they are hurled from one reality to the next.

We’re fascinated by the fact that the character Monica Rambeau appears in the cast. The actress who plays her, Teyonah Parris, is well known for her roles in the TV series Empire, but this is her first genre role of any kind to be released (she plays Brianna Cartwright in the 2021 horror/suspense film Candyman, a spiritual sequel to the original film). Monica Rambeau becomes the second woman to take on the mantle of Captain Marvel in the Marvel Universe at some point – but we don’t yet know whether Wandavision broaches this subject or not.

We do know that the series is intended as a link to the next mini-series coming from Marvel Studios, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which implies that what is happening to Wanda and Vision is magical in nature.

Wandavision is directed by Matt Shakman. This is his second comicbook project, the first being a 2019 episode of Netflix’s dystopian superhero series The Boys called Cherry. The six episodes of the Wandavision series becomes available for streaming on Disney+ in December of 2020.
