Do you remember Star Trek: The Animated Series from 1973? Well, Star Trek: Lower Decks is nothing like it at all. The new animated Star Trek series will begin playing on CBS All Access streaming service on Thursday. August 6, 2020.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will focus on the support staff of the U.S.S. Cerritos, specifically four ensigns. Based on the information released by CBS so far, ST: Lower Decks sounds like a cross between Adult Swim and Seth MacFarlane‘s The Orville.
The protagonists of the show are Ensign Rutherford, Ensign Beckett Mariner, Ensign Brad Boimler, and Ensign Tendi. Ensign Rutherford is voiced by Eugene Cordero (Reles in Kong: Skull Island, Stoke in The Mandalorian). Ensign Mariner is voiced by Tawny Newsome (Captain Angela Ali on Space Force). Ensign Boimler is voiced by Jack Quaid (Connor in Rampage, Marvel in The Hunger Games.) Ensign Tendi is brought to life by Noël Wells (Rachel Moonbug in The Aquabats! Super Show!),
Other voices will include Jerry O’Connell (Quinn Mallory in Sliders, the voice of Superman several times in various cartoons) as Commander Jack Ransom, and Dawnn Lewis as Captain Carol Freeman. Lewis voiced Professor Klabrax in Cleopatra in Space, and played Mama Leone on iZombie and Blabberwort the Troll in The 10th Kingdom). Fred Tatasciore will be Lieutenant Shaxs. He has vast experience as a voice actor (Solomon Grundy and Commissioner Gordon in DC Super Hero Girls, the Hulk in Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers Assemble, and Deathstroke in Young Justice.) The ship’s doctor may or may not be the same species as Ensign M’Ress from the original Star Trek animated series; Dr. T’ana is voiced by Gillian Vigman (Jessica Morelli in The Defenders).
Star Trek: Lower Decks will air exclusively on CBS All Access in the United States and is distributed worldwide by ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group.
The series is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin and Roddenberry Entertainment’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth, and Katie Krentz (219 Productions) serve as executive producers alongside creator and showrunner Mike McMahan. Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, serves as a co-executive producer. Titmouse (Big Mouth), the Emmy Award-winning independent animation production company, serves as the animation studio for the series,
Star Trek: Lower Decks has been developed by Emmy-winning writer/producer Rick McMahan of Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites. Following the premiere August 6, new episodes of the series’ 10-episode first season will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays, exclusively for CBS All Access subscribers in the U.S.
