Foundation is a new science-fiction television series based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels, which are regarded as among the greatest sci-fi stories of all time; it earned the Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966, beating out Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein.
The story of Foundation follows the efforts of scientist Hari Seldon, whose invention of “psychohistory” is a kind of math that can predict the future. Facing the fall of the Galactic Empire (think ancient Rome, but in the future), Hari creates the “Foundation,” a colony of exceptional people who must preserve all of human knowledge to ensure civilization can restart.
Long considered unfilmable, Apple+ has taken on the challenge, beginning production in Ireland with 8K cameras and a massive budget.
The TV show will star Lee Pace as the Galactic Emperor, Brother Day. Pace played Ronan the Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy. Jared Harris will star as Dr. Hari Seldon. Harris played Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Captain Mike in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and David Robert Jones in Fringe. Laura Birn will star as Eto Demerzel, the enigmatic aide to the Emperor of the Galaxy. Terrence Mann will star as Brother Dusk, the eldest living member of the ruling family.
Foundation will have a committee of executive producers. David Goyer (scriptwriter of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and the David Hasselhoff made-for-TV-movie Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD) will be showrunner and one of the show’s scriptwriters.
Other executive producers include David Ellison (producer of Star Trek Beyond and World War Z), Dana Goldberg (producer of Gemini Man and I Am Legend), Marcy Ross (producer of Sword Art Online and Altered Carbon), Cameron Welsh (executive producer of Krypton and producer of Constantine), Josh Friedman(scriptwriter of the 2005 War of the Worlds and creator of Terminator: the Sarah Connors Chronicles) and Dr. Asimov’s daughter, Robyn Asimov.
Skydance Television is producing the new Foundation series. There’s no release date yet apart from the announcement that it will make its debut in 2021. If they have enough footage to be able to do a trailer, that release must be less than a year away as of today, so we’re guessing sometime in the spring.
