Cambridge, UK – Frontier Developments, the creators of the long running definitive space simulation Elite Dangerous, announces its most ambitious update yet. It’s Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, a new major expansion for Elite Dangerous, arriving in early 2021. For the first time, players will be able to touch down on alien worlds and leave their ships to explore them on foot from a first person, feet-on-the-ground perspective.

Elite Dangerous already had a rich subtext, with a constantly evolving back story. Empires rise and fall, and as a pilot plying the spaceways in your carefully maintained, often flamboyantly painted but heavily armed ship, you fly missions for various factions, increasing your ranks in their organizations along with access to the perks that come with them – or strike out on your own, flying your own missions trading goods between star systems, taking materials and supplies to where they’re needed – for a handsome profit, of course – or just exploring the galaxy.

The subtext for it all has been the conceit that you, the pilot, are a person in this grand galactic civilization, but until now there was no way to experience that directly. You had to imagine what your life would be like outside the ship, because as a player you never had a personal first person view that didn’t involve the cockpit of some kind of starship or planet rover of some kind.

With Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, all that changes. The press release from Frontier Developments suggests not only that the new first person add-on for the original game will be adding ground combat, but tactical alliances, with missions ranging from diplomacy to commerce, lethal stealth to all-out combat. There will also be social hubs dotted throughout the galaxy where players can meet up with other Commanders, and talk to them face to face. The size and detail of this new expansion transforms Elite Dangerous into an entirely new immersive gaming experience.

Comparisions between Odyssey and Star Citizen are inevitable, but with Elite Dangerous, you can have these experiences without having to spend stupifying amounts of actual, real world currency to buy and outfit your ships.

Odyssey is our most ambitious Elite Dangerous expansion to date,’ said David Braben, Founder and CEO of Frontier. ‘Extending coverage to the super-fine scale that is needed for on-foot gameplay while maintaining the vast raw distances measured in light years, is a huge achievement by the team, and greatly extends the already rich Elite Dangerous experience. We hope you will join us to continue this journey of discovery and adventure when Elite Dangerous: Odyssey launches in early 2021.’
