Starting with Captain America’s indestructible vibranium shield, they have my attention. Watching Falcon practicing throwing it, they have my focus. Seeing the Scarlet Witch and the Vision together in the setting of a 1960’s sitcom? Okay, what the heck is going on here? And then Loki? Okay. Now I have got to find out what this is all about.
The promised expansions of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are arriving on the Disney+ streaming service, and from the brief clips we see in this promo, it looks like exciting, silly, intriguing fun and adventure.
During last night’s Super Bowl, Disney declared that ‘the universe is expanding’, and showed us some tantalizing snippets from Wandavision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki.
The new show Wandavision seems to show will transplant the characters of Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, and Paul Bettany’s AI android Vision, into the bizarre world of a 50/60/70s-style sitcom, but not firmly into any of them.
Series producer Jac Schaeffer seems to be at the helm of this one, and rather than going for the obvious low-brow humor, there’s something more sophisticated going on underneath. The setting seems to jitter back and forth from one era to the next, with Wanda being continually off balance as reality shifts from one basis to the next. The couple appear to have become unstuck in time, and now have to cope with life in this new mode. We can think of one way this could have happened: the Big Snap may not necessarily have restored everything to its proper place. There may have been some … interesting … adjustments.
Even curiouser, one brief shot even appears to show them standing in front of two cribs – so it looks like the couple have twins – before two baby’s pacifiers pop up from the cots.
We also get a glimpse of the new The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson practicing with Captain America’s shield, and and also having a run-in with Daniel Brühl’s Baron Zemo.
There’s also someone wearing a Captain America suit running onto a football pitch. Some have theorized that this is Wyatt Russell’s character John Walker who, in the comics, becomes US Agent, an alternate Captain America – but we suspect they didn’t check the skin color on the back of that someone’s hand. No, we think this is Sam Wilson making his first public appearance as the new Captain America.
Then finally, just as we thought we’d seen it all, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki turns up at the end, in distinctly non-Asgardian garb.
“I’m going to burn this place to the ground,” he says.
Ooooh, boy.
After having launched in the US before Christmas, Disney+ arrives in the UK on 24 March.
